Massive wildfires are continuing to rage throughout California. It has been so devastating and disheartening to see the posts and videos on social media showing the impact that the fires have made on California. Within minutes of the fire starting, it was already roaring over the mountains. However, amidst the devastation and tragedy, we do see hope through the many stories being shared.
Many people and animals have been affected, including horses. Some owners are facing the decision to set their horses free to escape from the fires, not knowing if they are going to survive or not. 500 horses were stabled at the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center and most of them were set free to run from the flames. From that training center more than 46 racehorses were killed by the flames or smoke inhalation. Trying to save six horses, a horse trainer was also seriously injured, suffering from third-degree burns, and is currently in a coma at the UC-San Diego Medical Center. Some horses are being found and treated while others are still lost and possibly starving.
